Spiced pear porridge

An established dish converted to shelf-stable ingredients. Every substitution is documented below.

How long it keeps

About 12 months, set by Rolled oats.

Indicative, for planning a build before you buy. The answer for a pack you already own is the best before date printed on it, and that only holds if it has been stored as the label says.

Ingredients

  1. Almonds toasted dry, two minutes, out.
  2. Milk powder whisked into 400 ml cold water. Oats, ginger, cinnamon and a proper pinch of salt in.
  3. Gentle simmer, stirring, 5 to 6 minutes.
  4. Chopped pears with two or three spoonfuls of their juice stirred in for the last minute.
  5. Almonds over.

No sugar in the ingredient list on purpose: the pear juice does it. Taste before reaching for any.

What this was adapted from

Stovetop porridge with stewed fruit

  • fresh pear stewed with the oats → tinned pears, added at the end with their juice

Fresh pear breaks down into the oats as they cook. Tinned pears are already soft, so they go in at the end and their juice sweetens the pan -- which means no added sugar at all, and a slightly looser porridge.
